Re-education
...

To join an operative group, an anomalous human must undergo re-education.

Re-education facilities exist within and outside LAS. These facilities are akin to mental wards, relying heavily on psychoactive drugs, hypnosis, and psychological manipulation tactics. The facilities break down the individual's psyche and retrain them for appropriate behavior and thought-processes. Each re-education experience is tailored for each person, and designed for fast results. Proto-operatives are not the only individuals to enter a re-education facility, but specialized sectors of each campus exist for them.

Each patient breaks differently. The process ranges from a few days to a month, depending on the resilience of the patient. When the patient leaves, they either cannot recall their treatment, or remember only incomprehensible bits.

Re-education in Action

Operative re-education changes the individual's aptitude for obedience and responsibility. One's respect for higher-ups, captains for example, is hammered in. Now, the thought of disobeying their captain or rebelling induces a fear response. Because of this re-education tactic, captains often cultivate a swollen ego as a consequence of brainwashing. An re-educated operative will fall hypnotized when a captain delivers a direct order. Keywords, such as "command", awaken the state. Other situations can rouse obedience, such as a stern look from a captain, or a situation where they have been trained to behave a certain way.

The operative compulsively follows rules and instructions. How obedient they end up depends on the individual, but re-education has a high success rate. An operative is fortified by re-education to blockade and neutralize demons. If an operative ends up becoming a demon, they are tortured with guilt and anguish. They feel the urge to either commit suicide or turn themself in and tell their captain—a hard compulsion to resist.

No one is quite sure what happens to an AO who turns themself in, but all assume it's unpleasant.
